  • Judge Trina Thompson was confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on May 18, 2022. 
  • Previously, Judge Thompson served on the Superior Court of Alameda County since 2002 and was the first Black woman ever elected to serve on that court.
  • From 1991 to 2000, Thompson worked in private practice as a criminal defense lawyer, focusing on juvenile, misdemeanor, felony, and capital defense trials. 
  • From 1986 to 1991, Thompson was an Assistant Public Defender in the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office.
  • In 2011, President Obama appointed Judge Thompson to serve on the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, where she provided advice and analysis on federal juvenile delinquency prevention programs and crime prevention activities.
  • Judge Thompson received her A.B. in Legal Studies from U.C. Berkeley in 1983 and her J.D. from U.C. Berkeley School of Law in 1986.
