Micah W. J. Smith was confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii on November 29, 2023. Previously, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii, a role he had since 2018. He is also Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division and Criminal Civil Rights Coordinator in that office, and has been the office’s Chief of Appeals and Legal Strategy since 2022. Prior to that, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York between 2012 and 2018. For 4 years beginning in 2008, he was an associate and counsel at O’Melveny & Myers L.L.P. Smith clerked for Justice Souter on the Supreme Court in 2007 and Judge Guido Calabresi on the Second Circuit in 2006. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2006 and his B.A. from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 2003.
