  • Judge Gabriel Sanchez was confirmed by the Senate on January 12th, 2022. He previously served on Division One of California’s First District Court of Appeal since 2018 to 2022. Sanchez was the first Latino male to ever serve on California’s First District Court of Appeal.
  • From 2012 to 2018, Sanchez was a senior advisor to Governor Jerry Brown on several issues including criminal justice reform. Sanchez was the lead author of the Public Safety and Rehabilitation Act of 2016, which allowed certain non-violent defendants to be considered for parole, and established sentence credits for rehabilitation, good behavior, and education.
  • Sanchez was a deputy attorney general of California from 2011 to 2012, where he worked on several prisoner class action cases.
  • In 2010, Sanchez received the ACLU of Southern California’s Social Justice Award for his work on Bautista v. State of California, which strengthened heat-related safety standards for farmworkers.
  • Judge Sanchez received his B.A. from Yale College in 1998, his Master of Philosophy in European Studies from the University of Cambridge in 2000, and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2005. He was a Fulbright Scholar and later clerked for Judge Richard A. Paez of the Ninth Circuit.
